Residence and works permit

When an exhibition is organized by a French cultural organization, the foreign creative artist (who is not a resident of France) does not in principle exercise a professional activity in France, even if the artist is present during certain periods of the exhibition (installation, opening, etc.).

Exhibitions of works by creative artists may involve two forms of compensation :

compensation linked to the sale of the work in France ;
compensation for the right to exhibit the works (representation rights for the work).

These compensations are not paid in exchange for the exercise of a professional activity in France ; the artist is not engaging in a salaried activity or in commercial, industrial or craft activity which would require foreign nationals to obtain a work permit prior to working.

In this case, if the creative artist comes to France, for example to the opening, then only the formalities concerning entry into France (visas, etc.) are necessary : no formalities regarding work permits are required.

Nb > In order to obtain a visa from the French embassy or consulate in the artist’s country of origin, the artist will need to provide proof of the reason for his or her stay in France (since professional travel is the case here, proof could be provided by letters exchanged with the French organization hosting the exhibition, the contract signed, etc.).
